What's The Best Car Insurance For You To Purchase?

June 16, 2010

Car insurance coverage, in it's simplest terms, is 'shared risk' or 'spreading the risk'. It's something that nearly everybody needs (and buys) but nobody ever wants to have to use. This brings to mind an old saying... "It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it." It's true.

Most countries have laws requiring drivers obtain vehicle insurance coverage. There are some notable exceptions (South Africa being one). But even though having insurance on your car may not be legally required most would agree that it's still a good idea. Here's the reason why.

Even if you're the safest driver in the world you're still out on the road among many others who may not be so diligent in their driving technique. Like they say -- accidents happen. An insurance policy 'spreads the risk' of your having an accident between ALL the policy-holders your particular insurance provider has currently underwritten. Not every one of them is going to make a claim (of course), and the policy issuer knows the statistics and the odds of approximately how many WILL be making claims.

Their system is very scientific and allows them to determine how much premium to charge a policy holder for each specific type of coverage issued. The most popular (and most expensive) policies are called 'comprehensive'. As the name implies, this type of policy covers a wide range of 'comprehensive' perils.

While auto insurance may not be required where you live it IS required if you're financing the car. All borrowing institutions want their interest in the car protected against any eventuality and, thus, they will insist you obtain full, comprehensive coverage. These policies will pay claims relating to theft, accident damage, acts of nature, and even hi-jacking. They will also include bodily injury and third party damage (liability) protection.

If you're driving a beat up old jalopy that's not being financed (and would be easy to replace) you may not want comprehensive coverage. Other, lesser costing policies exist that don't include coverage for damage done to your own car. They primarily provide you with liability protection in case you hit someone else and they sue you for damages. A serious accident can spell financial disaster for an uninsured motorist.

As with most things these days, the Internet offers an excellent environment for finding the type of policy that's just right for you. There are 'aggregator' sites that actually do the work for you. After putting in basic information they will supply you with a list of appropriate insurance companies offering the coverage you seek. They'll also provide a comparative list of price quotes.

Putting a car insurance policy in force has never been easier. Since nearly everyone buys this kind of insurance the market is huge and also quite competitive. The Internet makes it easy to learn, to compare and to buy. Take a look at what's out there.
