Deciphering the Writer

January 26, 2010

You might be wondering what makes writers tick. What kind of food do they eat? What type of music do they listen to? What hobbies do they have? Why are you asking these questions? I bet that you probably have to write about them.

Relax. Writers aren't some sort of alien species—they happen to be human beings who enjoy the same things that you do. But in case you might find writers weird, here are some of things that most writers indulge in before writing their essays, poems, or maybe novels.

Some writers prefer to have lots of coffee when they write. I've done an essay on a fellow writer and he told me that he has to have coffee, or else, he would not be able to write. It doesn't matter if he's writing an essay or a novel—there has to be coffee. Perhaps, it stimulates his mind, or maybe it's just a simple quirk. There are other writers who write in their car seats, some write when they're drunk, and so on. In fact, another writer, Stephen King, needs everything to be in their place before he starts writing. I have the same quirk as Stephen King's. Before I write my essay, I want everything to be in their place and within my reach. If not, I spend a lot of time fixing and rearranging them like crazy.

Most writers seem weird because they have quirks. But have you ever thought that everyone has quirks and some of them aren't even writers? It's just a matter of perspective. Some of us have far more eyebrow-raising quirks, to be honest. So, the next time you want to write a research paper about writers, try not to think of them as beings from Mars.
