Ray Starling was a talented composer and pianist who performed and recorded with jazz greats such as Kai Winding, Buddy Rich, Johnny Richards, Ray Eberly, Claude Thornhill, Sal Salvador, and Stan Kenton. He also arranged for numerous bands including the Stan Kenton Orchestra and his own New York Sound Stage One Orchestra. However, Ray is probably still best revered for his talents as a mellophonium soloist. In this program we'll explore Ray's mellophonium performances with the Stan Kenton and Johnny Richards Orchestras and his own New York Sound Stage One Orchestra.
