About five years ago, I was in Portland with a sunny Sunday afternoon to kill before I flew back to Spenard. I hopped on a bus and rode it until I found a fun neighborhood to explore. I wandered into a music store and found a band playing on a low stage in the back. There weren't many people in the store, so I sat on a couch and enjoyed the serendipitous concert. I really enjoyed the music--they describe it as... a scrap metal heap. A steamy compost pile. A splintery porch swing. Green gutter water. A pack of flea-ridden ferals. Best put, Spigot burps out an urban-rural junkyard mishmash o' tunes....pulled directly outta the derrier. And we have a hoot-uv-a-time doin' it, that's fer sure.I listened for an hour and chatted with some of the band members while they packed up. Then I flew back to Anchorage. Later I regretted not buying a CD, so I emailed the band and Nann mailed me a CD. I still listen to it and would recommend it if you don't mind a few potty words.

"Hey" is my favorite track off the album so I saved it for last. And even more from Dave's website:Dave’s voice is most often compared to Tom Waits, and his style on the piano varies widely from soulful ballads to blues, country to boogie-woogie. He always brings along his fist-full of blues harmonicas that round out his sound. His set list for live shows includes a cornucopia of great tunes from artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, T-Bone Walker, Woody Guthrie, John Prine and Johnny Cash. He is also an award-winning published poet…and with a little prompting may do a few numbers without the piano at his shows.

More from Dave's website:Mobile Home Girl showcases his quality songs (and his interest in trashy women). The album also has depth and dimension way beyond the trailer park. The album is really a collection of stories from London to North Carolina, and Nebraska to Alaska. Dave’s previous job as a documentary videographer for Heartbeat Alaska; a show specializing in bush Alaska, allowed him into the lives of amazing people from all over the North. You may have seen his work on PBS, ABC, CBS, FOX and the Discovery Channel. The people and places he sees first hand ring out in his songs, (sometimes they don’t tell you the whole story on TV.)

From Dave's website:Dave is a two-time finalist in the Alaska Song of the Year Contest in the “Alaska Songs” category. He also received an honorable mention in the 2001 Anchorage “Press Picks” for his excellent songwriting. The Anchorage Press called his CD “a treat from beginning to end.” He has opened for the likes of: James Mathus (front man for the Squirrel Nut Zippers), Dan Bern, and Jazz piano legend Mose Allison. Dave’s music gets radio airplay from Alaska to California and points in between. He’s even played inside Folsom Prison. KVMR Radio in Nevada City California calls Dave "Better than Greg Brown”.

Dave Manning was known as "the Tom Waites of Anchorage" when he lived here (I think he may have even lived in Spenard--at least I saw his VW Microbus around). I don't generally like solo piano acts, but I always enjoyed his performances. His songs had humor and energy. I think he lives in Nevada now, but you know what they say: "You can take the man out of Spenard, but you can't scrub Spenard out of the man with a wire brush." The following 2-minute samples are from his album Mobile Home Girl. Unfortunately, they don't include the classic barter song I heard so often.

Nat Guy, founder and president of Big Contact, has been a big help to Radio Spenard, offering not only technical assistance but musical recommendations. More bluegrass than Old Time, The Biscuit Boys are a Nashville-based band offering "mountain music for city folk." The following samples are from their album, Live from Nashville.Play Audio Now
Description
Musical selections from the web, streamed into your home from The Independent Republic of Spenard, and featuring music that I like, mostly from people I know.
